What Is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is a condition associated with inflammation and swelling of the sinus passages. Symptoms can include a runny nose, nasal congestion, facial pressure or pain, and headaches. Sinusitis often goes away on its own, but it is best to see a doctor if symptoms persist for more than one week or if you have a history of chronic sinusitis. Our ear, nose, and throat specialist treats sinusitis.

Sinusitis Causes and Symptoms

Sinusitis is often caused by the common cold. It can also develop as a result of allergies, environmental pollutants, or other factors that irritate the sinuses. A deviated septum, nasal polyps, or other abnormalities in the nasal passages can also increase the risk for developing sinusitis. Other risk factors include an immune system disorder and certain medical conditions.

Inflammation of the sinus passages is a primary sign of sinusitis. Inflammation often results in blockage of the sinuses so they are unable to properly drain. This can lead to a broad range of symptoms, including:

  • Nasal congestion (stuffy nose)
  • Nasal discharge (runny nose)
  • Facial pressure or pain
  • Aching in the teeth
  • Altered sense of smell
  • Headaches
  • Ear pressure
  • Coughing
  • Bad breath
  • Fatigue
  • Fever

Treatment and Prevention of Sinusitis

See a doctor if you have a high fever, a history of chronic sinusitis, symptoms persist for more than a week, or if symptoms become worse after temporarily improving. We utilize several methods for treating sinusitis at our ENT office. Treatment methods include:

  • Saline nasal spray
  • Nasal corticosteroids
  • Decongestant medicine
  • Allergy medications
  • Pain relief medications
  • Balloon sinuplasty

Steps can be taken to reduce the risk of developing sinusitis following a cold or allergies. Some helpful preventive measures include:

  • Washing your hands regularly
  • Avoid being around people who are sick
  • Using a nasal spray or oral decongestant
  • Drinking plenty of fluids to help keep nasal discharge thin
  • Avoiding air travel when sick or using a nasal spray decongestant prior to take-off
  • Using an antihistamine to control allergy attacks
  • Avoiding allergy triggers whenever possible
